Faculty Council to meet Friday, 10/5, 3-5pm at Stone Center, Hitchcock Room

The Faculty Council will meet on Friday in the Hitchcock Room at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center.  Council members are welcome to come early at 2:30pm for beverages and light snacks.  The chancellor, provost, and chair of the faculty will all address the Council and respond to questions. Items on the agenda include resolutions regarding minimum guidelines for course syllabi, and regulations concerning independent study courses. Dr. Taffy Benson Clayton, Vice Provost for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs will give brief remarks. Prof. Steve Bachenheimer will provide information about the UNC Advisory Committee on Strategic Directions and Prof. Joe Ferrell will present nominees for the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus/a Awards in closed session. We’ll be live-tweeting the meeting with the hashtag #FacCouncil from our account @UNCFacGov.

Faculty encouraged to attend University Day events, October 12th

In keeping with longstanding University tradition, all members of the University community are invited to gather to celebrate the University’s 219th birthday on University Day, Friday, October 12 at 11:00 a.m. in Memorial Hall.  The celebration commemorates the laying of the cornerstone of Old East and the official founding of the University.  To encourage University-wide participation, classes are suspended between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  This year’s guest speaker is Prof. Jamie Bartram, Director of the Water Institute.

Since 1971, the University has awarded Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards on this day.  This year’s recipients are: Gregory Stanley Allgood, B.S. 1981, M.S.P.H., 1983;  Mary Marshall Clark, B.A., 1975; Deborah Parham Hopson, M.S.P.H., 1979, Ph.D., 1990; Jonathan T. M. Reckford, B.A., 1984.  The Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award will also be presented for the second time, this  year to Prof. Ferrel Guillory, Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Director, UNC Program on Public Life.

The academic processional will assemble at the Old Well beginning at 10:30 a.m.  Faculty are asked to wear their academic regalia. Faculty who lack regalia but wish to join the procession may do so and sit together with us in reserved seats.  In case of rain, participants will assemble on the first floor of Phillips Hall. Retired faculty from around the United States to meet in Chapel Hill

Over 100 retired  professors representing university retiree organizations across the United States will meet at UNC-CH beginning  on October 21 for the Tenth Anniversary Conference of the Association of Retiree Organizations in Higher Education (AROHE).  Featured Keynote speakers will include: Trudier Harris, Carlyle Sitterson Professor Emerita, UNC-Chapel Hill, (Paul Hadley Lecture ), Dr. Robert Clark, N.C. State University Professor, Department of Economics, Nortin M. Hadler, M.D., Ph.D., UNC-Chapel Hill an outspoken advocate for healthy living, and David D. Perlmutter, Director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Starch Faculty Fellow at The University of Iowa. Click here for more information about the keynote speakers

Additional Conference work sessions will include: What makes a successful Emeritus College, the new generation of university retirees, international perspectives on retirement organizations, fraud, vulnerability and aging, programming for retirees as an organizational mission, and Social Security the jewel in the crown of American social welfare.

UNC faculty members are encouraged to welcome retired colleagues to the Carolina Campus and are eligible to register for all or part of the Conference: full three day registration, $340.00, single day registration, $150.00. Campus-Wide Events and Award Deadlines

Junior Faculty Development Awards call for nominations

The University will accept applications this fall for Junior Faculty Development Awards up to the amount of $7,500. Applicants must be full-time, salaried faculty members without tenure and must not have been proposed for tenure prior to the application deadline.  Early career tenure-track and fixed-term faculty members may apply. Applications will be submitted online using Sakai.  Please submit a brief email to JFDA.Provost@unc.edu requesting access to the Sakai site, and be sure to include your ONYEN and UNC email address.

Submit the following by 5:00 PM on Friday, October 19, 2012:

A.  a signed introductory letter to the Chair of the Committee on Faculty Research and Study Leaves;
B.  a curriculum vitae;
C.  a narrative description of the project to be undertaken.  In no case should more than two pages be submitted;
D.  a brief proposed budget which cannot exceed $7,500.  The budget should show the kinds of expenditures proposed (e.g., salary, fringe benefits, travel, equipment, etc.), and should also indicate any other funds (e.g., NEH Summer Fellowships, University Research Council awards, etc.) which will be used or which are available for the support of the project;
E.  a signed letter of endorsement from the applicant’s department or curriculum chair or, in the case of non-departmentalized schools, the dean of the school.  Submit this letter separately to CB#8000, ATTN: Gordon Joyner or email Gordon@unc.edu.
